Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988)

The fifth installment of the Police Academy series shifts base to the exotic Miami when Comdt. Eris Lassard (Gaynes) gets kidnapped. Captain Harris (Bailey) is as usual trying to overthrow Lassard and take over his position and has learnt that Lassard has crossed the state mandatory retirement age and is overdue to vacate the post. Lassard is always being awarded the police officer of the decade at Miami and he invites his trusted officers to accompany him for the ceremony. Tony (Auberjonois) is a thief who recently stole some diamonds but accidentally managed to switch bags with Lassard at the airport. With his diamonds with Lassard, he decides to kidnap him to extract them with Lassard's team hot on his trail. The movies in this series were never really high on entertainment with average humour, predictable plot and weak acting. A lot of the actors and characters were subject to shuffling, with the latest being Steve Guttenberg who played the lead role of Carrey Mahoney who was absent from this movie. An avoidable movie only to watch if you really need something light and simplistic.

Ra.One (2011)

Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Tom Wu, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami

Time and gain I have said that Bollywood lacks recipe and in spite of rapid evolutions in movie-making, ideas still seemed to be ripped out of Hollywood blockbusters. Shekhar Subramanium (Khan) is a game developer for Barron Industries but does not appear to be cool enough in the eyes of his son Prateek (Verma). In a bid to get into his sons good books and make an outstanding video game, Shekhar develops the ultimate super villain, Ra.One (Rampal/Wu). Ra.One is equipped with artificial intelligence where he quickly learns the moves of his players and gets smarter and hence tougher. Things start going haywire and Ra.One from the game comes to life and wrecks havoc. He is out to hunt for Prateek whom he has learnt is his most formidable opponent and decides to hunt him down. In order to stop Ra.One the good guy G.One (Khan) is brought to life and to bring an end to his mutiny. Shekhar's wife Sonia (Kapoor) and Prateek are in danger of being killed and it is up to G.One to save them. The movie is a rip-off of Hollywood's best superheroes all in one. Ra.One and G.One share the same suit design as Iron Man, especially the HART which is a direct copy of the same device on Iron Man. Many fight scenes are copied from Terminator including the one from Terminator 2 where T-1000 rebuilds itself after getting disintegrated by liquid nitrogen. The movie has supposedly tried to use the most advanced special effects to date but yet many scenes seem be hopelessly out of place and look tacky even for 20-year-old graphics technology standard. The movie is a total wash down and a case study of 'How to create too much buzz for an entirely worthless product'. It still kills me on how G.One managed to come back to life after being killed, any answers?

Hole in One (2010)

Sex sells? At least that is what the makers of this movie believe in. Here is our recipe; get a young famous actor, get some gorgeous skimpy clothed woman, add some considerable nudity, sprinkle some slap-stick humour and if you really wish, add a plot to it. Eric (Talley) is an amateur golfer who hustles people and makes a living. His best friend Tyler (Ellison) runs a store that sells clothes golf apparel and the two are enjoying their life the way it is. On one eventful day, Eric makes a bet with two plastic surgeons at golf and loses, or rather gained, something he wish he never had. Steve Talley has emerged as the new god of sex-comedy movies after his success with American Pie and Van Wilder. The movie is a mindless comic with no laughable humour or entertaining plot outline. If loads of topless woman is what defines your style of entertainment then this movie is definitely up to the mark else it is a pure waste of precious time. Watch at your own risk.

Wild Things: Foursome (2010)

The fourth version of the sexual murder mystery is here; and you wonder why. The first Wild Things was something else. The twisted and unpredictable plot along with the sizzling Denise Richards' love scene gave the movie a different credibility. The subsequent movies have tried to utilise the same format, with different actors with a lot more emphasis on the sexuality, which has failed miserably. In spite of the second and third movies not doing very well, the fourth installment has come out with no exceptional differences. Carson Wheetly (Parker) is the son of one of Florida's richest men and becomes a rich heir when his father dies in a car crash. Brandi Cox (Murray) a colleague of Carson's arch enemy Shane (Randall) accuses Carson of raping her and demands a large sum of money as settlement. Double-crossing becomes a ritual and relations get bloody as everyone now wants a part of the money. Detective Frank Walker (Schneider) smells a rat and realises that everything is not as simple as it seems and boldly decides to dig a little further. The movie has its own bit of twists and turns but each and every one of them is more or less predictable along with being stupid and lame. The performances are hopeless and the movie is only trying to sell sex and nothing at all. Probably if some more high-profile actors were selected along with a more improved and modified plot line, the movie would have been a whole lot better and the franchise would have done well.

Thank You (2011)

The million dollar question, what is Bollywoods one and only formula to create a comedy movie? Answer; Akshay Kumar + a foreign location + tons of skimpy clad woman + husband-wife complications. Been there, seen it, done that. Raj (Deol), Yogi (Shetty) and Vikram (Khan) are three friends conducting business together who regularly cheat on their wives and have loads of other mistresses. To avoid getting caught, they watch out for each other and have a ball of a time. Raj's wife Sanjana (Kapoor) loves her husband to no end and refuses to agree upon the fact that he might be cheating on her. Yogi and Vikrams' wives, Maya (Jaitley) and Shivani (Sen) introduce her to detective Kishan (Kumar) who specialises in conducting sting operations against cheating husbands/wives. He tries to collect evidence to prove to Sanjana that there is indeed an affair going on with Raj and some other woman. Meanwhile, Raj, Vikram and Yogi suspect that there is someone trying to bring out their secret to their wives and hence they too hire Kishan to find out who is uncovering their secrets. The usual confusion, mix-up and stupidity follows which gives you a week-long hangover. The plot is utterly ridiculous and the melodrama and unwanted craziness is just too much to digest. My condolences to everyone who had to bear the brunt of this movie and my sincere apologies for not posting this review early enough.

Zoom (2006)

Starring: Tim Allen, Courteney Cox, Chevy Chase, Spencer Breslin, Kate Mara, Michael Cassidy, Ryan Newman

The Zenith Team was a team of super-heroes led by Zoom (Allen) many years ago. The team collapsed when the government tried to artificially enhance their powers which turned Zoom's brother Concussion onto the evil side who subsequently killed all the team members except Zoom who simply lost his powers. Concussion was presumed dead and now the government has information that he will return in less than 10 days. Zoom is now a demoralised aging man who doesn't believe in super-heroes anymore and is recruited by the government to initiate a training programme where people with unique powers are to be recruited and trained by Zoom. A new team is formed consisting of Tucker aka Mega-Boy (Breslin) who can inflate any part of his body, Summer aka Wonder (Mara) who can control objects with her mind, Dylan aka Houdini (Cassidy) who can become invisible and Cindy aka Princess (Newman) who has super-strength. Time is slowly ticking by and the new team is far from ready. With Zoom not having any amount of faith in the children, his demoralising and uninterested attitude don't help things too much. The movie tries to blend every possible genre known to movie-making and makes a big mess of things. Multiple lose strings, scenes added without having anything to do with the storyline and unexplained parts plague the entire movie. The movie might just vaguely appeal to the average 7-year-old but still needs a lot to work on. Highly avoidable.

Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

Starring: Anushka Sharma, Ravneer Singh

Two college graduates are poles apart, where one plans on a career the other plans on nothing. Shruti (Sharma) aims on becoming a successful wedding planner, whereas Bittoo (Singh) the son a sugarcane farmer wants to do anything to get away from cutting canes all his life. Bittoo meets Shruti when he is crashing a wedding and starts flirting with her. He soon persuades her to make him a part of her company so that he doesn't have to go back to his dad. Shruti agrees, given the condition that Bittoo would not fall in love with her. Her golden rule, don't love the person you work with, be it your girlfriend or your wife and she intends to stick to it. Being a Yash Raj film, the rest of the story can be narrated flawlessly by a two-year-old, scene by scene. The movie has the very regular Bollywood cliches like the dialogues, plot development, twists, climax etc. There was a slight spark of comedy in the beginning which simply faded away as the movie went along. Probably if that aspect was picked up on, then the otherwise boring plot would still have become a bit more watchable. Overall, a good two hour paid nap is what you get.

Thumbs up: Ranveer Singh, having no previous modelling or acting experience has done a fairly decent job

Little Man (2006)

An African-American midget, Calvin (Marlon Wayans) and his partner Percy (Morgan) rob an expensive diamond from a jewelry store. While being pursued by the police, he slips the diamond in a lady's purse and runs away. The lady, Vanessa (Washington) and her fiancee Darryl (Shawn Wayans)are oblivious to the huge priceless diamond they are carrying. In order to get back their diamond, Calvin becomes a baby and is left on Vanessa and Darryl's doorstep. Darryl wants to start a family soon but Vanessa is more concerned about her career.With young baby Calvin in the house, Darryl's wish comes almost true but Calvin plans to bail out of the house the moment he has the diamond in his hand. The movie has a lot of lame humour the movie is horribly slow. The special effects used to make Marlon Wayans look like a baby is a bad job and his stupid and overdone performances are of no help either. Probably if some jokes were more on the lines of Home Alone the movie might have been a better watch, but it sadly isn't. There are some slightly funny parts but that's about it. Avoid at all cost.

The Last Airbender (3D) (2010)

Starring: Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, Nicola Peltz, Shaun Toub, Jackson Rathbone, Aasif Mandvi, Cliff Curtis

Why? Is the question that immediately pops into ones mind right after the movie gets over.Why did M. Night Shyamalan even try to create a movie on such a horrible plot? Why did Dev Patel ruin a promising career by attempting such a lame role? There existed four kingdoms on Earth, each belonging to one of the natural elements i.e. Earth, Fire, Water and Air. Each community had Benders, people with power to control their birth element. There was one supreme power, called the Avatar, who could bend all the elements and who maintained balance on Earth. The Avatar goes missing for a hundred years, leaving the Earth in jeopardy. Fire Lord Ozai (Curtis) uses his advanced technology to invade and destroy the remaining kingdoms in order to gain control over Earth. Prince Zuko (Patel) his incapable son, is sent to exile and can only be heir to the throne if he manages to find and capture the Avatar. Katara (Peltz) and her brother Sokka (Rathbone) who belong to the water tribe, find the Avatar and rescue him. The Avatar has not completed his training and must learn how to bend the other elements if he has to restore order on Earth and put an end to the Fire Lord's dominance. The movie actually doesn't have as bad a plot as it seems like, its just that the execution was bad which failed to bring out the true essence of the movie. The dialogues were outright horrible and performances were poor. 3D seemed to be a forced addition so its no worry if you watch it in 2D (if that saves some money then even better). In spite of having a known star cast of Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis and Shaun Toub, their presence failed to do any good to the movie. Pure waste.

Kill Kill Faster Faster (2008)

A drug-addict, Joey One-Way (Bellows) gets bailed out of jail by his good friend Markie (Morales) who wants Joey to write a movie for him. Markie's girlfriend Fleur (Ray) and Joey start having a sexual relationship without Markie knowing about it. However, life is not easy for Joey because his past is always haunting him. He feels guilty for what happened to his wife and two daughters because of his drug addiction and cant seem to get over it. No matter how hard he tries his life is just too miserable for him to tolerate anymore. The movie is a big fail when it comes to the plot and performances. The story is just too messed up and goes around aimlessly without making too much sense. It tries to be profound and deep but rather than making it a good watch, it just turns out to make it hopeless. Die, but don't dare watch it.

Kites (2010)

There is a standard rule when it comes to Bollywood. The amount of hype a movie creates is inversely proportional to its success. My self-made statistics reveal that 99.99% of the viewers preferred to expose themselves to third degree torture rather than watch this movie. The remaining 0.01% comprise of people like me who sit through the entire movie and write reviews. Jay (Roshan) is a Casanova living in Vegas who tries to make money by doing green card scams. He falls in love with a multi-millionaire casino owners daughter Gina (Ranaut) simply for her money. Gina's brother Tony (Brown) is all set to marry his girlfriend Linda (Mori). Linda has once married Jay in order to obtain a green card and is now marrying Tony only for his money. Jay and Linda slowly and steadily fall in love with each other, something which Tony eventually learns about and despises. What ensues is a wild goose chase across half of the United States with almost the entire police force hot on their tail. Their needs no explanation that the movie is a damp squid and the sexy Barabara Mori repeatedly in a bikini does little to improve things. Poor acting and a hopelessly boring, slow and dragged plot adorn 2 hours of your life which go as a complete waste. 'Sucker' is the only word that comes in my mind.

Housefull (2010)

Arush (Kumar) is a born loser. Wherever he goes, bad luck follows and casino owners use him and his bad luck to make people lose money. Fed up, he goes to London to stay with his childhood friend Bob (Deshmukh) only to find him happily married with Heetal (Dutta). The duo get Arush married to their boss, Kishore's (Kapoor) daughter, Devika (Khan) and send them off for a honeymoon. Arush later learns from Devika that she loves someone else and on hearing this tries to commit suicide. He gets rescued by Sandy (Padukone) and the two fall head over heels for each other. Heetal's father (Irani) is rich farsan-baron in Gujarat, India and Heetal lies to him that she is happily married with a multi-millionaire with a son. Meanwhile, Sandy tells her over-possesive brother Major Krishna Rao (Rampal) about Arush and seeks his approval for their marriage. Both brother and father land up together to separate the truth from the lies and learn about exactly what is happening in the house full of idiots. The movie sadly doesn't deliver what it promises. One expects roll-over-the-seat laughter but you will get none. What you would definitely get is a pathetic headache and the urge break into the ticket window and demand a refund. The over-acting of Akshay Kumar and most of the star cast is highly annoying and Boman Irani is the only saving grace when it comes to some serious laughter. Chunky Pandey and his small role too is effective which could have been taken forward for the rest of the movie. The unnecessary song sequences showing the actresses in sexy bikini's sizzling the screen gives more frustration than respite. A complete washout, avoid at all costs.

Dragonball Evolution (2009)

Two thousand years ago, an evil warlord Piccolo (Marsters) descended upon Earth along with his disciple Ozaru. A group of monks used their powers to confine Piccolo and bring peace on Earth. Piccolo has escaped from his confinement and is accumulating the seven dragonballs, which when brought together will grant the person one wish. His wish is to destroy Earth. Goku (Chatwin) is a fighter whose grandfather has trained him in martial arts. His grandfather hands him one of the dragonballs and tells him to keep it safe. Goku soon learns of Piccolo's escape and must prevent Piccolo from getting hold of the dragonballs. He gets accompanied by Bulma (Rossum) a researcher who was studying a dragonball before it got stolen, Master Roshi (Chow) a martial arts teacher and Yamcha (Park) a bandit thief. The movie has used an amalgamation of the most cliched plots ever in a hope to make something stereotypical which it sadly does not. Poor performances and not so thrilling action sequences made this movie a damp squid. The action is reminiscent of the Mortal Combat video games, once popular years ago and simply looks out of place. I actually thought that the movie would be in line with the popular anime going by a similar name, but its not.

Fighting (2009)

Starring: Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard, Zulay Henao, Brian J. White

Shawn MacArthur (Tatum) takes on underground street fighting in a bid to make some money. Harvey (Howard) was first to spot Shawn and the talent he holds and becomes his agent, getting fights for him. Shawn and Harvey start making good and quick money and Shawn soon becomes popular amongst the street fighting circuit. Shawn falls in love with Zulay (Henao) a girl he once met randomly on the street. The movie has an extremely basic plot of an unknown young lad making the way to the top and becoming rich and famous. Each and every twist in the plot is predictable and most of the dialogues are boring and seem like one big drag. The fights scenes are supposed to be the movies USP, which sadly are not that great either. A complete waste of time and highly avoidable from every angle.

Bruno (2009)

From the makers of Borat comes another stupidly mindless comedy, Bruno. Bruno (Cohen) is an Austrian fashion-designer, who like all other designers is gay. Due to an incident he loses his reputation and decides to go to Los Angeles to become famous. Repeated attempts at becoming famous miserably fail. Be it acting in a movie, starting his own talk show or doing charity, nothing helps Bruno in becoming a star. His side-kick Lutz (Hammarsten) is crazily in love with Bruno, but Bruno doesn't pay any attention to his advances. The movie is similar to Borat in some ways. The same immigrant with a companion coming to the United States. Sex-filled, stupid, mindless jokes that disgust you more than making you laugh are carried forward from its predecessor. If you liked Borat then only should you dare to watch this movie, else its better left alone.

A Night at the Roxbury (1998)

Starring: Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Gigi Rice, Elisa Donovan, Molly Shannon

Two very stupid and annoying brothers, Steve (Ferrell) and Doug (Kattan) Butabi go club-hopping in big hopes to find some good girls to flirt with and get laid. Their over-enthusiastic attitudes coupled with a stupid dressing sense doesn't get them anything except slaps and kicks. They have a huge ambition to start a nightclub of their own which would allow people like them to gain free access without standing in lines. Their brotherhood breaks over a disagreement and both their lives go for a toss. A pretty lame attempt at trying to make the audience laugh at stupidity which lacks any aspect of humour. The entire getup of Ferrel and Kattan are enough to put one off from watching the movie and any sane person should entirely stay away from this one.

Van Wilder: Party Liasion (2002)

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Kal Penn, Tara Reid, Daniel Cosgrove

Van Wilder (Reynolds) is in his 7th year at Coolidge College. He is in there not because he consistently fails to pass but because he consistently makes himself fail. He loves staying on campus and everyone loves him for all that he does. From organising parties, helping guys hook up with girls and taking care of ill students, Van does it all. In fact he has so much on his plate, that he actually needs an assistant who turns out to be Taj Mahal Badlaandabad (Penn) whose last name literally means 'big dick land', is an exchange student from India and wants to learn the American way of life. Gwen (Reid) is a journalist, whose editor wants her to do an article on Van and his seven years at college. Van, however, is not going to give his interview so easily and has other things on his mind with Gwen. The movie is quite a lame attempt at being funny. It falls into the category of those movies which tried to do an American Pie but failed miserably. Reynolds looks a bit too out of place to pull of the role and Kal Penn, as usual plays the role of the sex-hungry Indian, a role I guess he is going to fulfill all his life.

Twilight (2008)

Bella Swan (Stewart) moves in with her father at Forks, Washington, when she found it difficult to live with her mother in Arizona. A legend lives amongst the native Indian tribe at Forks, that vampires once intruded upon the land who then made a pact with the tribesmen and agreed to maintain peace amongst them. Bella gets acquainted with Edward Cullen (Pattison) and they soon develop a love-hate relationship, alternating between the two as per the circumstance. Bella finds Edward to be a little suspicious and after some researching, realises that he is one of the vampires. In spite of knowing the truth about Edward, Bella cant seem to forget about him and they soon get closer to each other and fall in love. Loving a vampire is dangerous and Bella decides to battle everything, just so that she could be with Edward, her true love. The movie is horribly boring and tortoise slow right from the word go. You might just find yourself counting your yawns to pass the time that you foolishly invested to watch this movie. The vampire story was pushed aside to make way for the love story, where it actually should have been the other way around, much like what we saw in the Underworld series of movies. If you do end up enjoying it, it means that you're either a die hard romance fan or you just wanted a reason to drool over Robert Pattison.

Mousehunt (1997)

Rudolf Smuntz is a millionaire who has made his money by manufacturing string. With his death, all his assets and properties are transferred to his sons Ernie (Lane) and Lars (Evans). Ernie is a chef whose once famous restaurant has been shut due to contaminated food. Lars was put in charge to run the ailing string factory, whose sales have fallen miserably due to lack of demand. Both having failed to make any reasonable income, decide to move out and live at an old and isolated house which they inherited from their father. The house was in a poor shape and the brothers soon find out that the house was made by the famous French architect, LaRue and is worth millions. They decide to restore the house and auction it and split the income in half. During their restoration process, they come across an unknown resident of the house, a mouse. The mouse is determined to throw the intruders out of his mansion and the brothers want to do precisely the same. The movie at first glance seems to be a laugh riot, but as it progresses you realise you're badly mistaken. The movie tries very hard to get you to laugh and the performance of Lane and Evans isn't too exciting either. The movies humour is based on tried and tested jokes which don't make you laugh anymore. Your kid brother might have a good time but you definitely wont.

American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009)

The American Pie series are infamous for its sexual content and the hilarious jokes. Most of us have watched the earlier series numerous number of times and have laughed. The latest installation in the series, fails to live up to the mark of the previous legends. Rob (Hall), Lube (Hardesty) and Nathan (Horton) are three dudes studying at East Great Falls High. Like every other American Pie movie, the three friends are virgins, who have sworn to get over the shame and become proud men. All their attempts go in vain and when they are just about to lose hope, they find 'The Bible'. Its a book which has been compiled for forty years by students, who reveal the ultimate secret of getting into bed with the opposite sex. The book unfortunately, gets destroyed and the three friends decide to recreate it. The movie follows a story that we have seen before and there is nothing new to look forward to. Stiffler (Jordan) was a consistent character played by various actors in all the previous movies and it was this role that created the entire story. However, this time Stiffler was pushed to a side to make way for other characters, which to an extent spoilt the entire show. The jokes are few, but make an effort to get you to laugh. The movie has nothing new to show and seems like one big drag. If it is sex comedy that your looking for, there are way better movies than this one.
